PCI Compliance for Pacific Island Hotels

Series: Booking & Pre-stays Micro Report

This article is part of a series dedicated to helping hotels optimise their booking flow and pre-stay process in the Pacific Islands. The insights and data have been derived from the Booking & Pre-stays Micro Report (Pacific Islands), which is a free report for hotels, produced by Kovena.

There are a range of reasons why processing payments can expose hotels in the Pacific Islands to unnecessary risks regarding PCI Compliance. Properties also need to satisfy their payments provider and Online Travel Agencies (OTAs) that they handle their guests’ data correctly and securely.

Nearly 47% of payments processed by Pacific Island hotels are at risk of fraud and not being PCI Compliant.

When card payments are not being taken in a secure fashion, it can lead to possible security or data breaches. 21% of properties in the Pacific Islands call their guest and ask to retrieve card payment details over the phone. When a hotelier writes down the card details on a piece of paper and does not properly dispose of the piece of paper after the card details are secured, this can lead to these details being in the wrong hands.

If a guest falls victim to fraud and it can be proved that poor data security at the hotel was to blame, there is potential for the hotel to be held liable for the losses.

It’s worth noting that most major Online Travel Agencies (OTAs), like Booking.com and Expedia both require a hotel to be fully PCI-DSS Compliant if they are integrating card payments within their platform and want to charge the guest before arrival.

Nearly half (43%) of all bookings made in the Pacific Islands come from OTAs. Losing access to OTAs because of non-compliant payment processing could cause massive cash flow problems.

Micro Reports will be released each quarter with data derived from the Pacific Islands Hotel Insights 2022 Report, and will be free to access.
