Pacific Hotel Payments Landscape is eager for transformation in line with tourism recovery

Kovena’s Pacific Islands Hotel Insights 2022 Report finds that accommodations in the Pacific pay up to 211% more for international transactions.

18 August 2022, Suva, Fiji Islands: Today, Kovena, the world’s first hotel-only payments solution, releases its inaugural Pacific Islands Hotel Insights 2022 Report. Providing valuable insights on the technology currently being used by hoteliers in the region, the report details information on payment collection, running daily operations, distribution and inventory marketing, as well as data on how hoteliers are improving their guest experience using technology.

The report has been produced by Kovena in cooperation with Pacific Trade Invest (PTI), Hotel Link, and CounterPoint, in a bid to improve the global competitiveness of Pacific Hotels. With over 130+ responses from hotels across the Pacific Islands, the report draws comparisons to guest booking experiences in other markets globally and provides actionable insights for local hotels.

Key highlights from the report include:

  • Pacific Island hotels pay 211% more for international transactions, based on the average percentages rates charged vs global percentages charged
  • 54% of local hotels do not offer card payments at the time of booking
  • 26% of hotel bookings within the region are made directly through the hotel website
  • 44% of Pacific hotels manage operations manually without a Property Management System (PMS)

Speaking on the report, Kovena’s General Manager, Samuel Rutledge commented, “The Pacific Islands Hotel Insights Report is a great tool for Pacific hotel operators wanting to understand what their competitors are doing in the region, as well as benchmarking their practices, payment charges and tech solutions against global best standards.”
